It was named for Colonel Miles Vernon (1786–1867), a state senator and veteran of the Battle of New Orleans.

NOTE - In Vernon County, records are only given to those who follow the rules. Firstly, the office is only open from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 a.m.-AND 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. CST. In Vernon County, a person must bring a photo ID to be granted access to records. A driver's license and a state ID are examples of acceptable photo IDs. In order to be granted, all record requests must be put in writing in Vernon County.
