Criminal Records
The Missouri State Highway Patrol serves as the central repository for statewide criminal history records. It provides public access to these records through its Criminal Justice Information Division. Similarly, the Clay County Sheriff's Office generates and compiles criminal history records of persons within the county.
How To Get Criminal Records
The Missouri State Highway Patrol process law enforcement and non-justice requests for criminal history records and background checks. Interested parties may request background checks from the Missouri State Highway Patrol in one of two forms: a name-based/personal identifier search, or a fingerprint search.
Name-based searches provide open record information such as arrests less than 30 days old from the request, prosecutor-filed charges, conviction information, and suspended impositions. Requestors are required to complete a criminal record check form, and forward both the request and indicated fee to the:
Missouri State Highway Patrol
Criminal Justice Information Services Division
Post Office Box 9500
Jefferson City, MO 65102
Fingerprint-based searches include both open and closed record information and will require a completed applicant fingerprint card. Fingerprint cards may be obtained using the Clay county Sheriffs Office Fingerprinting Service, which will require in-person requests. Completed fingerprint cards should be sent along with the criminal record check form and any applicable fees to the:
Missouri State Highway Patrol
Criminal Justice Information Services Division
Post Office Box 9500

Alternatively, the Clay County Sheriff's Office may mail fingerprint information, along with the query to the CJIS.

Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
