St. Louis County Court Records
The St. Louis County Circuit Court generates court records from legal proceedings occurring in the county. St. Louis County constitutes Missouri's 21st Judicial Circuit. It is the state's busiest jurisdiction, managing 12.6% (120,000) of annual filings. This circuit should not be confused with the City of St. Louis, which is a different (the 22nd) judicial circuit.
Every court record produced in St. Louis County provides learning opportunities for the public, helps the judiciary maintain a fair justice system, and gives litigants the resources to prepare for legal cases.
Section 483.082, RSMo empowers clerks of courts to create, collect, and maintain court records in a manner directed by the Missouri Supreme Court. In St. Louis County, the Office of the Circuit Clerk maintains most of the county's court records on-site. However, some records have been moved to an off-site location. Notwithstanding, these records can be accessed by interested and eligible persons since they constitute St. Louis County Public Records.
Are Court Records Public in St. Louis County?
Yes. Many St. Louis Court records are considered public under § 610.023, RSMo. However, records marked confidential by state or federal regulations and court rules are not publicly available.
The Supreme Court of Missouri's Court Operating Rules contains a list of confidential records, outlines the process for viewing sealed and expunged records, and clarifies which court records can be viewed online.
What Do St. Louis County Court Records Contain?
COR 4.03 establishes that every document filed from the initiation of a court case to its concluding date is a court record. Court records may consist of the following details:
- Complaints
- Warrants
- Motions, pleadings, and answers
- Docket entries
- Orders
- Case information, such as attorney, defendant, plaintiff, and judge names; citation and case numbers; addresses; dates of birth, and email addresses (especially for attorneys)
- Court location
- Witness statements and lists

How to Conduct a St. Louis County Case Records Search
There are different ways to view and retrieve copies of court records maintained in St. Louis County. Individuals can use the method that best suits their objectives, whether to find basic case details, obtain documents filed during a court case, or certify court records.
The Missouri Judiciary's Case.Net Website
The Missouri Court System's case management tool offers public access to following:
- Case Information
Individuals can search ongoing or concluded cases by case number, filing date, or a litigant's name. Individuals must provide the following details to conduct a name search:
- The Judicial Circuit (St. Louis County, in this case)
- A case party's last name (or business name where applicable)
- Optional information like first and middle names, case type, or filing location may also be provided
When searching by filing date, an individual must select St. Louis County from the drop-down menu, enter a date range, and choose the case status (closed, pending, or all).
Finally, the case number search requires users to provide a case number and the judicial district where a case was filed.
Case information that can be obtained after a search includes the case caption, case number, filing date, case disposition, and the assigned judge/commissioner.
- Scheduled Hearings & Trials Search
Members of the public can use this web application to find upcoming cases and trials. Search criteria that may be used include an attorney or judge's name. One may also search for cases scheduled on a particular date or seven-day range.
- Judgement Index
The Judgment Index database provides remote access to cases concluded in the Missouri state courts, including St. Louis County. Interested persons can access the electronic case system with a case party's name and venue. Additional search filters include case status, party name, case type, and filing year. Search results will depend on the criteria provided to facilitate the search.
The St. Louis Circuit Clerk's Office
Members of the public can search for and obtain official copies of case records from the St. Louis Circuit Clerk's Office. Requesters must provide the following information when requesting records:
- A plaintiff or defendant's name or case number
- Type of document (requesters can ask for complete case files)
- Copy type (authenticated or certified)
- The filing, judgment, or dissolution date, whichever is applicable
Individuals can submit their requests on the Public Records Request page or visit the clerk's office. When making a public records request, it is important to avoid disclosing sensitive personal information, such as a social security number.
Individuals must pay the required fees before the department will release the documents. Certifying the documents costs $1.50, and the authentication fee is $3.50. Each document copy after that costs $0.3.
The Missouri State Archives
Individuals can also find archived St. Louis County court records at the Missouri State Archives Division. Most of these records are available on microfilm.
- Louis County Civil Court Case Records
Civil court records are created from civil disputes between two or more litigants. These cases typically start when a plaintiff petitions the court for compensatory damages or equitable relief because they were injured or harmed by another party's actions.
Civil cases are heard in different divisions (civil, associate civil, small claims, probate, family) of the St. Louis County Circuit Court. Individuals can contact the St. Louis Circuit Clerk's Office or relevant division to obtain civil court case records.
- Louis County Criminal Court Case Records
St. Louis County criminal case records originate from legal proceedings involving persons suspected of breaking the law. Criminal cases are filed in the county's circuit court criminal, associate criminal, or municipal divisions. The documents are maintained by clerks of each division and the county circuit clerk's office.

Anyone interested in obtaining St. Louis County court records can visit the state judiciary's Case.net website. However, although case details are accessible for free on the online platform, individuals must pay to obtain official copies of court records.
